MS Exchange Server is a flexible and cost-effective solution used to manage business communications in big multi-national firms. It stores all the essential email data in one place and has full support for MS Outlook and various mobile devices. It uses an ‘.EDB’ database file to store user mailboxes. Users can view their mailbox data by synchronizing MS Outlook with MS Exchange Server.
When you open Outlook to check your emails, MS Exchange Server verifies the database to find out any messages that are waiting in the queue for delivery to your Inbox. After finding these messages, Exchange Server restores them and then sends them to the Inbox folder of your Outlook data file. Thus, Exchange databases contain pointers to your system and allow you to send or receive emails using MS Outlook.
The Outlook PST files represent replicas of mailboxes stored on the Exchange Server. These files contain emails, contacts, tasks, notes, calendar items, and journals. As these files are stored locally on each individual user’s workstation, mailbox data can be easily accessed even at the time of Exchange Server maintenance or downtime. When various maintenance tasks are performed, all data in the user mailbox becomes inaccessible. In order to regain access to this data, users may try an offline conversion of the Exchange EDB file to Outlook PST files. In other cases, you may need to upgrade to a new version of MS Exchange Server and use your older version files in the new installation. You can do so by converting your EDB file to multiple PSTs and then using these PST files to import data in the new installation of Exchange.
Microsoft provides two inbuilt utilities as per the version of MS Exchange Server to support EDB to PST conversion, i.e. Exmerge.exe and Export-Mailbox. These tools allow you to easily export your mailbox data from Exchange database to Outlook PST file. If these tools fail to perform the desired conversion, you can resort to professional EDB to PST software.
EDB to PST conversion software allow both corrupt and healthy Exchange database (.EDB) files conversion to Outlook data (.PST) files. Using these utilities, you can also extract emails from your Exchange database either as ‘.EML’ files or ‘.MSG’ files. They offer a simple and non-destructive approach to email conversion and provides preview of mailbox data in the main interface. These tools support all versions of MS Exchange, including MS Exchange 2010, 2007, 2003, 2000 and 5.5.
